Hair implants for hair loss are now available for men and women. Recent advances have meant you can now fully restore your appearance and self-confidence. The treatments are suitable for a receding hair line, male pattern baldness and hair loss in women.
Hair loss treatments when carried out by an experienced team are safe, fast and effective. With only minimal or no scarring.
Things to Consider Before Surgery
Be clear in your own mind exactly what you are trying to achieve. Hair loss therapy, although effective, is expensive. It is essential that you stop smoking for at least 2 weeks prior to surgery and for 2 month afterwards. Smoking affects the blood supply to the treated areas.
The Consultation
Choosing the right team is critical.
Questions to ask during your consultation:
- How many patients have you treated?
- What percentage were successful?
- If the hair implants fail, will I get my money back?
- Is the procedure painful?
- How long will it take?
- What is the total cost?
- How long will it last?
- Will my new hair look natural?
- Do you use the FUE or the strip technique?
Hair implants Costs
The FUE [follicular hair extraction] hair transplant method is currently the gold standard for hair loss treatment. Pricing is £5 per follicle. Each follicle is capable of producing 1 to 5 hairs. That’s £5000 for 1000 follicles. The overall cost will depend on the extent of your hair loss and how much of it you want to replace.
The FUE Procedure
Performed under local anaesthetic. Injecting the anaesthetic stings for a few minutes – just like at the dentists.
The individual grafts are then removed, one by one, from the donor site – usually the back of the head. They are then inserted into pin point size holes in the area of hair loss. A 1000 grafts takes 3-6 hours. If you require more grafts than this they are usually carried out over a few days.
Recovery
The pin point holes will be red for up to 5 days. They then scab over as part of the natural healing process. The scabs will lift off after 7 days.
The treated areas will swell. This will happen for the first 2-4 days. It will resolve within 10 days in most patients.
Your consultant will give you a regime to follow to ensure the best possible results. It is essential that you follow their advice.
You should start washing your hair after 2 days. This helps to remove dead skin and the scabs that form.
Avoid direct sunlight to the treated areas for 2 weeks. The donor area will have healed by then.
Allow 7-10 days off work. By this time everything should have settled down.
Complications
Bleeding is rare.
Infection can occur. Be wary of increasing pain, tenderness and swelling around the donor site and the treated areas. Contact your consultant immediately if you are concerned. Infection will require antibiotics.
Scarring is less common with FUE than the older technique of strip hair transplants.
Hair loss will occur with ageing. This is perfectly natural and to be expected. Further hair implants may be required in the future.
Implant rejection does not happen because they are your own hair follicles.
Summary
Hair implants are a safe and effective treatment for hair loss. They can successfully treat receding hair lines, male pattern baldness and hair loss in women.
